I’m going to buy one of these. I have a budget of $3,000 to work with, which should be more than enough to find a running V12. I may have to travel inland a bit to find a clean one but dammit I’m gonna make this happen.

Let’s make this journey together. Only your car is way cooler and looks better.
Still, congrats on the decision. Now to find the motor!

Lol $3k is just your entrance fee. Do it. We can be bad choice bros

How far of a drive is it to Cohasset? If perhaps I found one there would you be able to check it out?

I’ve always wanted one. I bid you good luck in your search.

As soon as you asked I went to craigslist. I knew where you were heading. I think I’m going to an open house

I emailed the guy and am waiting on pictures. My only options on craigslist are this, an ugly-ass white one in Boston, and a suspiciously low $1200 one near Hartford.
Nice looking house, btw. Just gotta get rid of that nasty wallpaper.

That’s the ugly white one I mentioned, and I don’t want a convertible.

I dunno, a convertible would go well there

Convertible has no buttresses.

They’re a lot of fun, I really like my convertible, but I like the 4 headlight version with the flying buttresses too. Good luck!

These are amazing looking cars but aren’t they plagued with English electronics?

Secret to a happy life with an older Jag:
1) Replace all hoses (fuel, coolant, oil, and as a lower priority PAS fluid, brake and A/C) and hose clamps as soon as humanly possible after you take possession of the car. Rubber isn’t meant to last 20+ years and Jag didn’t use the best material to start with, back then. There’s a hell of a lot of them, but they’re all pretty cheap and many can be substituted for generic hose. If you’re on a budget, start with the fuel lines.
2) Replace all the suspension bushes as you can afford it. Jags’ magic ride and handling relies heavily on a whole pile of rubber bits, and they’ll all be pretty f*cked on a car of this vintages. The bushes are cheap, but again, there are a lot of them and a few are bastards to replace without a hoist. You’ll be amazed at what it does for the road feel.
3) Take a weekend or two to disconnect, clean, apply dielectric grease to, and reassemble every electrical connection you can find, including those behind the dash and in the doors. The vast majority of Jag electrical problems are connector related.
4) Use the forums like they’re going out of fashion. There’s a wealth of info and a bunch of knowledgeable and helpful guys on http://www.jaguarforums.com/
4) Drive it. Like a Sir.

Good for you. And no matter what anyone says, automotive masochism is a perfectly valid lifestyle choice. :-)

Hell yeah :) love these things
I really want to make an e46 m3 fighter out of a 4.0l aj6-swapped early manual coupe. I think it can be done both weight and power-wise :)

What an excellent load of advice :)
You could substitute that for any car made in a similar vintage, especially luxury ones...
![]() 01/09/2016 at 04:27 |
|
Yup, you surely could.
Though 1 & 2 are more critical for Jags than for many others, I’d say. The OEM hoses really are crap, and a lot of them are pretty stupidly routed. And ride and handling on good bushes are such an experience it's a crime not to have it.

Yeah i’ve got an xj40 that was absolitely transformed when i changed the suspension bushes :)
And yeah the hoses are a notorious bit for cost-cutting on jags from the e-type til ford stepped in in 1990-ish. Blame sir william lyons’ legendary stinginess ;)

That XJS in Cohasset is a no-go. The guy reposted the ad with pictures and...
the paint is completely shot. Also the driver’s seat looks torn up. The only thing it has going for it is that it passed inspection last year.
There’s another one up in Marlborough that’s just out of my price range. It has the color I want and the wheels I want, and it’s got low mileage. There’s a fuel pressure issue though. Also it’s been sitting in a barn since 1999.

That’s going to be a hard car to find in good shape and cheap

I can deal with any mechanical issues, all I really need is a good body & interior because those tend to be super labor intensive/expensive to repair.
